The Veterans Mental Health Act and Chemical Dependency Act (A11098/S7961) has been sent to Governor Patterson (NY) for his signature. This legislation, which passed the Assembly and Senate with overwhelming majorities earlier this year, calls on the New York state government to create a comprehensive, long-term plan for addressing the mental health and substance abuse needs of veterans, current service members, and their families. The Governor’s office needs to hear from supporters!

Call and E-mail the Governor’s Office Urging Him to Sign the Legislation! To call the Governor, dial 518-474-8390 and leave the following message:
“I’m calling to urge Governor Paterson to sign A11098/S7961 into law immediately. These bills recognize the debt that New York State owes the men and women who have risked their lives in service to our nation by calling for the development of a veterans’ mental health and chemical dependency plan in New York State.”

To E-mail the Governor, click here.

Background:
A.11098/S.7961 calls for the development of a long-range and comprehensive plan to address the mental health and chemical dependency needs of veterans and their families. This plan would address many of the biggest threats to veterans who suffer from physical and mental disabilities – the lack of available services, the lack of accessible housing, the risk of suicide, unemployment and more.

This legislation will lay the groundwork for making it easier to get help for the millions of men and women who risked their physical and mental health in defense of our country.

Excelsior College launched 2 new programs, the Bachelor of Professional Studies in Business and Management, and the Bachelor of Professional Studies in Technology Management on March 1st.

These new military-friendly degree programs were designed for:
• Military servicemembers applying credit for military training toward a bachelor’s degree
• Military spouses
• Veterans
• DoD civilians with government-sponsored training evaluated for college credit by ACE
• People with associate’s degrees in applied science (administrative/management studies or technical studies)

You can apply up to 45 elective credits toward program requirements — a great head start to your bachelor’s degree that saves you time and money.

“The launch of the BPS degrees underscores Excelsior’s long-standing commitment to serving members of the military. For those pursuing specific career paths, a bachelor’s degree in business and management or technology may be essential. These programs are designed to allow maximum credit transfer, making degree completion much more efficient for those with military training to earn a degree matched to their career field. The new BPS degrees provide graduates of the AAS degrees in business and technology the opportunity to continue their education at the bachelor’s degree level.”

- Susan Dewan, Executive Director, Center for Military Education

Visit our Bachelor of Professional Studies page for program highlights or call 888-647-2388, ext. 1352.
